How We Supervise

Supervision at ACC follows a developmental model. Supervisees grow through predictable stages, and supervision is deliberately matched to the stage, never one-size-fits-all. As your competence, autonomy, and self-awareness develop, the structure, support, and depth of supervision develop with you.

Our approach is informed by the Integrated Developmental Model (Stoltenberg), which tracks growth across three structures: self- and other-awareness, motivation, and autonomy. Early on, supervision is structured, frequent, and skill-focused: a steady frame for high motivation and high nerves. In the middle stage, when confidence rises and wobbles, supervision becomes more reflective, supporting real independence with real backup. Approaching independent practice, supervision becomes collegial consultation: complex cases, ethical edges, and professional identity. We meet you where you are, and the supervision grows with you.

How We Supervise at ACC: a three-stage developmental model. Beginning (practicum and early internship): focused on self, high motivation, dependent on structure. Growing (late internship and early licensure): focused on the client, fluctuating motivation, testing independence. Integrated (toward independent practice): balanced awareness, stable motivation, independent judgment. Supervision adapts from structured and closely guided, to reflective with real backup, to collegial consultation.
